To set it up just put the “AutoSplit” folder in your Half-Life directory and launch it as a mod. It will work with wSplit or LiveSplit, just.make sure you have your split key set to numpadplus and use the pre-made splits packaged with the mod. Also turn off “Double Tap Prevention” in wSplit or LiveSplit.
Does any PC gamer not own a copy of Half-Life 2 now? When the game launched back in 2004 it was a must-have title, and since then it’s been in Steam sales for less than a handful of dollars so many times it became an insta-buy for just about everyone else. It’s also a fantastic game, but unfortunately it isn’t free of bugs and does look a little dated. That is, until now.
Half-Life community member Filip Victor has developed an extensive mod called Half-Life 2: Update, which brings the game bang up-to-date in a number of ways. It just got released on Steam and is completely free, you just need to own a copy of Half-Life 2 so you can install the standalone mod and enjoy the plethora of updates.
The download is 3GB and does not require you to already have the original Half-Life 2 installed on your machine. Having a legal copy in your Steam library is good enough. Once installed you get to play the game with the most advanced visuals yet seen for the 11-year-old game.
The lighting has had a complete overhaul, the shadows are much more detailed, there’s full High Dynamic Range support, a new particle system, and much improved fog. The bug fixes cover both visual and gameplay issues, of which there are far too many to list. You can clearly see the visual differences in the comparison video below.
One novel new feature is the Community Commentary Mode, which adds extra detail in the form of voiceover from well-known (community) voices. I think I’ll enjoy the updated game without this turned on first of all, then go back and have a listen. It’s certainly a nice thing to have available, especially considering this is all free.
