Removing the background on a picture in Microsoft Word is exceptionally easy. Word has a tool incorporated into the program that will essentially make your photo into a transparent PNG format. The only downside is that the photo must be able to accept the format changes. Some photos may require outside assistance to make advanced alterations to change the background color of photos before loading them into Word.
Reasons to Remove a Background
Inserting an image into a Word document means the background for that image is also visible. The background is not likely compatible and it will often overlap with text and other formatting on the document.
One common example is a logo that you want displayed in the header of your letterhead or any type of document. You only want the logo however, not the big square of white background that comes with most logo designs. If you make the image transparent, the background will drop away, leaving only the logo design.
The logo will now resize and easily format into the existing document styling. The same desire applies with many graphics like charts, graphs and general designs. Removing the background leaves only the graphic and it ultimately leads to a cleaner document layout and design.
Use the Formatting Tool
The picture tool that comes with Word, PowerPoint and other standard Microsoft products is surprisingly powerful, and it can remove image backgrounds. You can use the tool's automated settings to drop the background or trace around the area you want to remain visible.
Tracing is similar to the Magic Wand tool used in Adobe Photoshop for background pictures. The feature is not really well known, but it offers an easy alternative to making basic cutouts and edits without investing in the Photoshop software. To use this feature, click Insert followed by Pictures and locate your photo on your drive or cloud. You can also copy and paste the photo into the document. This will often set a massive photo however and you will need to resize to normal proportions.
Instructions For Formatting
Now the photo is inserted and highlighted. If the photo is not selected, simply click on it one time to select. Locate the Picture Tools header tab and click Format and then Adjust Group. Lastly, click Remove Background. Now look at your photo and the background should be highlighted to show the area set for removal. If everything looks good and you want to save the changes, click Keep Changes and the background will drop away.
If you still see parts of the background that need removing, select the Mark Areas to Keep or Mark Areas to Remove under the Background Removal section in the Picture tab. You will generate a pencil-shaped tool and you can use line drawings to adjust the selected area as needed. Select Keep Changes to finish up and drop the selected background area for good.
Advanced Photo Editing
The Microsoft Office tool is effective and it works for most purposes. The ability to trace means you can select specific elements from a photo and drop the remainder. Keep only the cutout of a person or a specific object in the photo.
The tool does not however provide any advanced editing features beyond the selection tool and background removal. To make significant edits or to transpose the selected area on a new photo, you will require a program that works in multiple layers. The Microsoft tool also will only work with normal file types like JPEG and PNG. It will not work with Vector file formats. Check your file type for compatibility before uploading to Word.
