For quite some time, multiplayer has been one of the key reasons why people have bought the Call of Duty games. This has been especially clear with Call of Duty: Black Ops 3‘s big changes. In the game’s online multiplayer, players will now have access to nine different Specialists who each have their own weapons and abilities. Multiplayer movement has also been overhauled with players now able to wall run, jump to massive heights, and swim – all while firing their weapons if they so desire.

But Call of Duty: Black Ops 3‘s core multiplayer mode isn’t the only thing that’s been tweaked to allow players to work together better, as the offline, single player campaign has also undergone some changes. Levels can be played by anywhere from one to four players at a time, with developer Treyarch having designed the campaign’s levels to accommodate a larger group. Even enemy A.I. scales to allow them to flank, deal with, and defeat more than one player-controlled character at a time.

With the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, however, publisher Activision previously revealed that only two players would be able to take on the co-op campaign simultaneously. Suffice to say, this was a huge blow to groups of friends who’d not yet purchased current-gen consoles. But now there’s even worse news, as the last-gen version of the game’s campaign has been cancelled altogether as a result of it being far too “ambitious” for PS3 and Xbox 360.

On theCall of Duty community blog, Activision explained that “the ambitious scope of the 1-4 player coop Campaign design of the PS4, Xbox One and PC versions could not be faithfully recreated on old generation hardware.” Instead, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 players on PS3 and Xbox 360 will only be able to play the game’s online multiplayer mode, as well as the Zombies mode – though the previously announced Weapon Paint Shop and eSports tools won’t be available on last-gen either.

Activision also says that to reflect the lack of a single player campaign, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will be priced at $49.99, rather than $59.99, and it will come with a downloadable copy of the original Call of Duty: Black Ops.

On the one hand, many PS3 and Xbox 360 players will be unfazed by this, as they were not interested in the offline single player mode anyway, but for many others this will be hugely disappointing. The campaign – which looked at how super-soldiers with cybernetic body parts would fight in war – looked massively intriguing. Not only that but the Black Ops 1 offer will not go down well with those that already own the game or those who don’t have great Internet connections and may be unable to download the title.

As for the Call of Duty games in the future, it’s currently unclear whether or not Activision will continue to release them on last-generation consoles. Judging by this and previous rumors that suggested that Black Ops 3 was cancelled on PS3 and Xbox 360, however, it doesn’t seem likely.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3is set to release on November 6, 2015 for PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
